Cleansing Techniques for Acne Prone Skin

Recently I attended a conference in Thailand and learnt the importance of SC, a.k.a. stratum corneum, in order to maintain clear skin.

In the beauty world, especially in Asia, cleansing is considered the most important part of a skincare regimen. Sure enough, one must regularly cleanse the outer layer of skin, or SC. The SC works by locking in moisture, while protecting our skin from outside stimuli. Some of the outside stimuli we encounter every day include pollution, dirt, and sweat. If we want to maintain healthy skin, we need the SC to work at its highest potential. This is where cleansing correctly comes into play.

Many of us are not cleaning correctly!

A Japanese personal care product giant finds that many consumers are not cleansing correctly worsening some skin problems such as acne. Based on this, I took away the following key points:

1) Some strong cleansing products penetrate the SC, causing inflammation and redness.

2) Dirt, sweat, sebum, and even dead cells need to be removed effectively without destroying the natural functions of SC.

3) Using rough pressure and rubbing the SC is one of the most common mistakes many people make. It aggravates acne and causes further inflammation.

4) Common skin related concerns, such as acne, can be prevented and cured faster if the SC’s natural functions are properly maintained.

‘Purify’ beauty regiment – Beauty Confidential

The Purify regiment I covered in Beauty Confidential book is a natural and sustainable cleansing technique that ticks all the points shared above. Implement this regimen early in your skincare journey for healthy and purified skin.

  1. Step 2 remove dust and toxins

    Wash your hands with soap. The cleanser should clean your face and not your hands. If you are wearing heavy make-up and need to use an oil-based make-up remover, follow steps 2–5. If not, skip those steps and start with step 6.

  2. Wash dust and toxins with water and pat dry. This step is optional. The air is polluted and while there is very little we can do to make a change immediately, there is a lot we can do to minimize the negative effects. A great and easy technique is to wipe away the toxins before they penetrate your skin. You can do this by spraying your face and dampening your skin, then patting it dry. Do this before using your daily cleanser. Remember, there are tiny molecules that can damage your skin over a long period of time. If it is rubbed every day, this practice will help ward off damage in the long run.
  3. Do not rub your skin when removing make-up. This is to avoid the unwanted substances from penetrating into the skin and to avoid damaging the top layer of skin. Movement that is too vigorous is one of the common causes of skin sensitivity, fine lines, and even pigmentation.

    Wipe off gently with warm, wet organic cotton.

  5. Wash your hands again.
  6. Foam the soap as much as possible. Washing the skin with the foam of soap prevents unwanted pressure. A foaming sponge is useful, but it must be stored hygienically. Again, do not rub, but instead use the palms and fingers, and wash gently from the center towards the outer parts of the face, low to high and left to right.

Standout natural ingredients with cleansing properties

-Lemon

Acts as a strong astringent, disinfectant, and mild bleach for the skin.

-Oats

Are effective for sterilization and acne eruptions. Oats are great for a gentle daily exfoliating cleanser. Oats boast anti-itch, antifungal and antigenotoxic properties.

-Coconut oil

One of the best oils for cleansing and moisturizing the skin. Mix at least 50% of another oil to prevent solidifying.

-Rose water

Rose water is a classic for a reason. Rose water helps to soothe and cool sensitive and irritated skin.

Along with its antiseptic and antibacterial properties, rose water balances and cleanses the skin.
